What Is Non-Emergency Medical Transportation?
Non-emergency medical transportation — commonly abbreviated as NEMT — is scheduled transport to medical appointments for patients who are medically stable but cannot use standard transportation. This includes patients who use wheelchairs, power chairs, or scooters; patients who are elderly or have limited mobility; patients who do not drive; and patients who live far from their medical provider.
NEMT is distinct from emergency ambulance transport. An ambulance is dispatched for life-threatening situations and staffed by paramedics who provide medical care en route. NEMT is for scheduled, non-emergency trips — a dialysis appointment, a follow-up with a cardiologist, a chemotherapy session, a post-surgical physical therapy visit. The patient is stable. They simply need a safe, reliable, dignified way to get there and back.
Comfort Life Transportation provides private-pay NEMT across Massachusetts. We are based in Lexington, MA and serve patients in 50+ cities across the state. Unlike large dispatch fleets, we are a small, personal operation — when you call us, you reach us directly, and when your driver arrives, they know who you are.

Frequently Asked Questions
Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) is scheduled transport to medical appointments for patients who cannot use standard transportation due to a medical condition, disability, or mobility limitation — but who do not require emergency medical care during transport. It includes wheelchair van transport, ambulatory transport for walking patients, senior transportation, and long-distance medical transport. It is appropriate for dialysis, chemotherapy, specialist visits, physical therapy, hospital discharge, and any other scheduled medical trip.
An ambulance is for life-threatening emergencies, dispatched via 911, and staffed by paramedics who provide medical care during transport — typically costing $1,000–$3,000+ per trip. NEMT is for scheduled, non-emergency appointments where the patient is medically stable. NEMT costs $35–$95 for a typical local trip and is the appropriate choice for the vast majority of patients who need to reach a doctor, hospital, dialysis center, or therapy appointment.
Comfort Life Transportation is a private-pay provider and does not bill Medicaid, MassHealth, or insurance directly. Some private insurance plans include a transportation benefit — check with your insurer about possible reimbursement. We accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards. No upfront payment is required to book. For patients who require Medicaid-covered NEMT, the Massachusetts MassHealth program coordinates transport through contracted brokers — contact MassHealth directly for those services.
For most local trips, we recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance. For long distance trips, 48–72 hours is preferred. We respond same day to all booking requests. For urgent situations, call us directly at (857) 777-9000 and we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.
Yes — we offer standing recurring schedules for patients who need regular rides to dialysis (typically 2–3x weekly), chemotherapy, radiation, physical therapy, or any other ongoing medical treatment. You set it up once and we handle every session on your schedule, with the same driver whenever possible for consistency and familiarity.
Wheelchair transportation is for patients who use a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, or motorized scooter and cannot transfer to a standard seat. Ambulatory transportation is for patients who walk — even slowly, with a cane or walker. Senior transportation is for elderly patients who walk or use a cane or walker and need extra time, patience, and possibly facility coordination. If you are unsure, call us at (857) 777-9000 and we will help you choose the right option.
