How to Prepare for Your First Medical Transport Ride: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you or a family member is booking professional medical transportation for the first time, it's natural to have questions about what to expect and how to prepare. Professional NEMT is a genuinely different experience from a taxi, rideshare, or shuttle. This step-by-step guide covers everything from booking to drop-off.

Step 1: Gather Information Before You Call

When you call Comfort Life Transportation to book, have ready: the exact pickup address (front door is the default), the destination address including building name or department, the appointment date and time, your name and callback phone number, your mobility needs (walk independently, use cane/walker, use manual wheelchair, power chair, scooter), any special instructions (oxygen equipment, specific entrance to use, positioning needs), and number of passengers (one companion rides free).

Step 2: Confirm Your Fare Before You Commit

Before your booking is finalized, we give you your exact fare — the final price with no hidden fees, no fuel surcharges, and no adjustments after the trip. Driver wait time at your appointment is always included. No payment is required before your trip. We accept cash, credit cards, and debit cards after the trip is complete.

Step 3: Prepare on the Day of Your Trip

Be ready at your door at the scheduled pickup time — not five minutes after. Bring your ID, insurance cards, and any required forms. Bring medications you may need during or after your appointment. Charge your phone. If you use a power wheelchair, charge it fully the night before. Remove loose items from wheelchair pouches before the driver arrives.

Step 4: What the Driver Will Do

Your driver arrives at your front door at the scheduled time. They introduce themselves and confirm your name and destination. They assist you to the vehicle — including operating the wheelchair lift if needed. For wheelchair users, they secure your chair with four-point tie-downs and fasten your seatbelt. They transport you directly to your destination. At the facility, they bring you to the correct entrance and walk you to the check-in area. They wait in the vehicle for the full duration of your appointment. When you're finished, they bring you directly home.

Step 5: Setting Up a Standing Schedule

For recurring appointments — dialysis, chemotherapy, physical therapy, or any repeating schedule — there's no need to re-book each time. Call us after your first trip and we'll set up your standing schedule. From that point on, we handle every session automatically. To get started, call (857) 777-9000 or fill out our contact form. Read our patient reviews to hear from patients throughout Massachusetts who use our service regularly.
